Welcome, fellow adventurers, to a tale of twists, turns, and unforgettable experiences in the hidden gems of North Macedonia and Albania. Join me as we traverse rugged mountain trails, soak in cultural wonders, and unwind on sun-drenched beaches, weaving a tapestry of memories that will last a lifetime.
A Rocky Start and a Warm Welcome
Our journey began with a rocky start as we arrived in North Macedonia six hours late, sans luggage, and feeling a tad disoriented. But fear not, for our trusty taxi driver came to the rescue, ensuring we reached our accommodation safely despite the ungodly hour. Thanks to his help, we were able to contact our host who graciously welcomed us into our temporary abode, allowing us to rest our weary heads after a long day of travel woes.
Ohrid: A Haven of Culture and Charm
Despite our late arrival, the sun greeted us warmly the next morning as we stepped out onto the streets of Ohrid, a picturesque town nestled on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Our days were filled with exploration, as we meandered through cobbled alleyways, admiring ancient churches and Byzantine-era architecture at every turn.
Boat trips across the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid offered moments of tranquility and reflection, while cultural excursions to sites like the Ohrid Fortress and the Church of St. John Kaneo provided glimpses into the region’s rich history and heritage.

Hiking from Valbona to Theth: A Mountain Adventure
Leaving the shores of Lake Ohrid behind, we embarked on a journey into the rugged beauty of the Albanian Alps. Boarding a bus bound for Valbona, we marveled at the majestic peaks and verdant valleys that stretched out before us, eagerly anticipating the adventure that lay ahead.
Setting out on foot from Valbona, we followed ancient mountain trails that wound their way through pristine wilderness, crossing gushing rivers and ascending rocky slopes with each step. As the crisp mountain air filled our lungs and panoramic views unfolded before us, we felt truly alive, immersed in the raw beauty of nature at its most untamed.

Arriving in Theth after a challenging yet rewarding hike, we were greeted with open arms by locals who welcomed us into their mountain village with warmth and hospitality. Sharing stories around crackling fires and savoring hearty Albanian cuisine, we felt a sense of camaraderie and connection that transcended language barriers and cultural differences.

Sarande: Sun, Sand, and Sea
With our legs weary but our spirits soaring, we bid farewell to the mountains and made our way south to Sarande, a coastal paradise on Albania’s Ionian coast. Here, golden sands and crystal-clear waters beckoned us to unwind and recharge, as lazy days lounging on the beach melted into tranquil evenings spent watching the sunset over the horizon.
Exploring the vibrant town of Sarande, we indulged in fresh seafood feasts and strolled along the bustling promenade, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere and the salty tang of sea breeze. As the days turned into nights and our time in Albania drew to a close, we reflected on the incredible journey we had shared, filled with challenges, triumphs, and moments of pure bliss.

As we bid farewell to North Macedonia and Albania, we carried with us a treasure trove of memories and experiences that would stay with us forever. From the rugged beauty of the Albanian Alps to the sun-kissed shores of Sarande, our journey had been a testament to the transformative power of travel and the beauty of forging connections with people and places around the world.
